Borrow Before You Buy: Highland Library’s Useful Hidden Collection

Cake pans, knitting looms and other borrowable items offer a practical starting point for cooler-weather projects

Before buying equipment for a single baking project or a new hobby, Highland residents have a useful place to check. Highland Public Library lends more than books through its Library of Things collection.

The library’s Highland Library of Things borrowing guide lists cake pans, knitting looms, chess sets and other nontraditional materials. With indoor evenings and holiday projects approaching, the collection offers a practical reason to look beyond the book shelves.

A good fit for occasional projects

Borrowing makes particular sense when you are curious about an activity but unsure whether it deserves a permanent place at home. A short trial can tell you more than another unopened purchase.

A shaped cake pan might suit one celebration, while a knitting loom could introduce a different kind of winter project. These are examples of how to approach the collection; availability depends on what is checked in.

Start with something you genuinely want to use in the next few weeks. Choosing a project first makes it easier to decide whether a particular item is helpful and whether the loan period fits your plans.

Know the borrowing rules

The library publishes a three-week loan period for Things and requires pickup and return at Highland Public Library. Borrowers sign an agreement, and staff check condition and parts at checkout and return.

Borrowers must be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian sign. Ask staff which card and account requirements apply to you before planning a special trip.

Computers and e-readers have a refundable $25 deposit, according to the published policy, with cash or check accepted for that deposit. Some listed phone chargers are for use inside the library, so not every item shown can go home.

Check the collection before visiting

Browse the Mid-Hudson library catalog for available items and contact Highland staff if a listing needs clarification. Ask about availability, any restrictions and the pieces included with the item you want.

Give yourself time to understand the instructions before beginning a project. Photographing how accessories fit into the container can make it easier to return everything together.

If your plans depend on a specific date, avoid assuming an item will be waiting on the shelf. Ask staff what arrangements are possible and have a backup idea for a time-sensitive celebration.

Checking first also gives staff a chance to explain anything that is not obvious from the catalog.

Return it ready for the next neighbor

Keep the item, its instructions and its accessories together throughout the loan. A designated shelf or container at home helps small pieces avoid getting mixed into a household drawer.

Things must be returned inside the library, rather than through the outdoor book drop. Plan around staffed opening hours so a last-minute return does not become a problem.

Tell staff about a missing piece or a problem rather than quietly putting it back. Clear communication helps the next borrower receive a complete, usable item and gives the library a chance to address damage.

Make a small project part of your week

Highland Public Library is at 14 Elting Place, Highland. Check its current hours and holiday closures before visiting; the library has announced a Veterans Day closure on November 11.

Pair the visit with a cookbook, craft guide or another resource that supports your project. The useful combination may be a borrowed tool and a little guidance for getting started.

Take a look before adding another occasional-use item to your shopping list. Your next indoor project may begin with a library checkout.
