Interesting Facts

Ulster County, New York holds some genuinely unexpected distinctions that even longtime Hudson Valley residents rarely know:

  • Oldest continuously operated ferry route in the US: The Rondout Creek area of Kingston once anchored the ferry crossing to Rhinebeck, a crossing that operated for well over two centuries, making it among the oldest water-transit corridors in the nation's history.

  • A cement empire: Ulster County was once the largest producer of natural hydraulic cement in the entire United States, with the town of Rosendale lending its name to a distinctive formula used in constructing the base of the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument.

  • Underground railroad geography: The county's Catskill Mountain terrain made it a critical corridor for freedom seekers heading north, with abolitionists using its dense forests and remote farmsteads so extensively that historians have documented dozens of verified safe-house sites there.

  • A drowned town: The hamlet of Olive City, along with several other communities, was deliberately flooded in the 1910s when the Ashokan Reservoir was constructed to supply New York City's water — displacing roughly 2,000 residents and erasing entire cemeteries from the map.

  • Sojourner Truth's origin: The famous abolitionist and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in Ulster County around 1797, in the town of Swartekill, making the county the birthplace of one of American history's most iconic voices for justice.

Ulster County is taking steps to better protect domestic violence victims by developing a lethality assessment program — a tool designed to help law enforcement identify when a victim may be in life-threatening danger.

The county's Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee has approved a resolution to establish training and implementation standards for the program. Backer Dominic Marino noted the effort aligns with state legislation already passed by the New York State Legislature, though awaiting the governor's signature.

The full Ulster County Legislature is set to vote on the resolution at its next monthly session, with planning and partnership-building poised to begin immediately.
