Ulster County Senior Centers: Activities, Meals, and Social Programs |
Senior centers throughout Ulster County provide daily activities, nutritious meals, fitness programs, and social opportunities for adults 60 and older |
Ulster County operates several senior centers that serve as community hubs for older adults, offering everything from daily meals and fitness classes to educational programs and social activities. These centers combat isolation, promote healthy aging, and provide vital support services for seniors and their families. For many older adults, the senior center becomes a second home where they can connect with peers, stay active, and access services that help them maintain independence.
Activities and Programs
Senior centers offer a wide range of activities including exercise classes (chair yoga, tai chi, walking groups), arts and crafts, educational workshops, game days, movie screenings, and special events. Many centers offer computer classes, book clubs, and cultural outings. Programs are designed for all ability levels and interests, with staff available to help participants find activities that match their preferences and capabilities. Some centers also offer intergenerational programs that bring seniors together with children and teens for mutual learning and connection.
Congregate Meals and Nutrition
Most senior centers serve hot, nutritious lunches Monday through Friday. Meals are prepared to meet dietary guidelines and accommodate special dietary needs when possible. The suggested contribution is $3 for seniors 60 and older, though no one is turned away for inability to pay. Meals provide an opportunity for social interaction and ensure seniors receive proper nutrition. Some centers also offer frozen meals to take home. The meal program is particularly important for seniors who live alone and might otherwise struggle with meal preparation or eat poorly.
Support Services and Resources
Senior centers connect older adults with additional services including health screenings, benefits enrollment assistance, transportation help, and referrals to home care services. Staff can help with Medicare questions, prescription assistance programs, and connecting with the Office for the Aging. Many centers offer case management services to help seniors aging in place. The centers also provide information about housing options, legal assistance, and caregiver support for family members.

The Saugerties center does a nice job but I wish they had more evening or weekend hours for people who still work part time. Not every senior is fully retired and the Monday through Friday schedule makes it hard to take advantage of any of this.
saugerties_sueI've thought about this too. My neighbor still does part time bookkeeping and she can never make it during the week. Even just one Saturday a month would open things up for a lot of people.
Three dollars for a hot lunch is a great deal but I want to know if transportation is actually available or just listed as a resource. That is the barrier for a lot of people in rural parts of the county who can not drive anymore. Would be good if they spelled that out more clearly.
RonaldTThis is a real issue. I looked into it for my father and the transportation help basically means they give you a list of phone numbers. It's not a coordinated pickup service. Would be great if the county actually ran a shuttle to these centers for people outside of Kingston.
My mom started going to the Kingston Senior Center last year and it honestly changed her life. She was barely leaving the house before that. Now she goes three times a week for lunch and does the chair yoga. The staff there are so kind and patient with her.
PattyM_KingstonThis is really good to hear. My dad is in a similar situation and I keep trying to get him to just try it once. Maybe I'll show him your comment. Did your mom go on her own the first time or did someone go with her?
