A 5 star average across 94 reviews is great but that review quote about taking a 5 year old rock climbing gave me pause. I get that it was tailored but seems pretty young. Curious what the actual minimum age recommendation is.
skeptical_sam99I think a lot depends on the kid honestly. My daughter did a basic intro with them at 6 and it was more of a low wall scramble than anything intense. The guides are pretty good about reading what the kid can handle. Might be worth calling and asking them directly.
I appreciate that they talk about the geology and ecology during the outings. A lot of guide services just get you up and back down. Learning something about the place while you're on it makes the whole experience worth more.
Ice climbing in winter?? I had no idea they offered that. I always assumed the Gunks were a warm weather thing. Now I'm genuinely tempted to try something completely outside my comfort zone.
Rebecca HoltIt really is a thing up here in winter! I did an ice climbing day a few years back and it was one of the coolest experiences I've had outdoors. Cold obviously but totally manageable with the right layers. Do it.
I grew up in New Paltz and these guys have been around forever. Solid reputation. If you're coming up from the city for a weekend this is the move, just book early because spring fills up fast.
localgunksCame here to say the same thing. Booked a Saturday in May two years ago and they were already pretty full by February. Give yourself way more lead time than you think you need.
94 five star reviews is impressive but I'd love to know how they handle bad weather days. Do you get rescheduled or is it just tough luck? Thinking about booking for my nephew who has never climbed before.
Dave K.I had the same question before I booked. I emailed them and they said they monitor forecasts closely and do reschedule if conditions are unsafe. They were pretty responsive actually. Worth just reaching out directly.
Ice climbing in the Gunks in winter? That's a little intense for me personally. Rock climbing with the kids sounds great but I'll leave the frozen waterfall stuff to braver people.
We booked with them last October and the fall colors up on the cliffs were unreal. Our guide spent like 20 minutes explaining the geology of the Gunks while we were on belay. My husband thought that was the best part honestly.
TrishMThe geology stuff is honestly underrated. Our guide pointed out these wild horizontal cracks called carriage roads and explained why the Gunks are so different from other climbing areas. I remembered more of that than I expected.
I grew up hiking around Rosendale and honestly never thought about doing a guided climb up there. Always figured it was just for serious climbers. Maybe worth trying the guided hiking option just to get a feel for it first.
94 reviews and a perfect 5 stars is pretty hard to argue with. Most places slip up somewhere. Curious if they ever do private group bookings for like a birthday or corporate thing, that could be really cool.
Took my daughter up to the Gunks last October with these guys. She was nervous the whole drive up and by the end she didn't want to come down. The guide really knew how to keep it fun without making her feel pressured. Highly recommend for families.
