Finding a skilled braider can be surprisingly difficult. The craft — knotless braids, box braids, cornrows, twists, and locs — takes years to master, and a great braider protects your edges, matches your hair texture, and can keep a style intact for weeks. In Ulster County, a handful of dedicated shops and stylists do this work well. We researched three of the best-established options, verified their contact details against multiple sources, and compared them below.

Quote Of The Day

“The lure of the distant and the difficult is deceptive. The great opportunity is where you are.”

— John Burroughs

There's a photo on the owner's website that says everything before the first sentence of the story does: a young boy standing in front of a finished log home, summer of 1986, grinning next to his grandfather. That boy is Mike Fanelli. The home was in Ulster County. And the craft running through his family was already thirty-four years old.

Today, Fanelli owns 3rd Generation Builders, a general contractor serving Ulster and Dutchess counties from an office at 1986 Ulster Avenue in Lake Katrine. The company name isn't marketing. It's a family tree measured in sawdust.

Joke Of The Day

I downloaded a hiking app for Ulster County.

Every time I pass an orchard, it recalculates my route to the cider doughnuts.

In 1823, the leaders of a tiny Ulster County settlement met at Hoornbeek Tavern to pick a name for their new post office — and immediately deadlocked. Every proposal failed. Finally, the tavern keeper's sister, Ellen Snyder, offered the one name nobody could argue with: her own. The village has been Ellenville ever since.

That stubborn little meeting was a preview of everything to come. Ellenville has reinvented itself for more than two centuries, and the latest chapter just arrived with $4.5 million in state funding.

Interesting Facts

  • A bridge ingredient: Natural cement quarried and made in Rosendale was used to build the Brooklyn Bridge.

  • A vanished route: The Delaware and Hudson Canal carried Pennsylvania coal across Ulster County to the Hudson River at Rondout, now part of Kingston.

  • Stone-house survivors: New Paltz’s Historic Huguenot Street preserves 18th-century stone houses built by descendants of French Protestant settlers.

  • A reservoir’s footprint: Building the Ashokan Reservoir for New York City’s water supply displaced communities in Ulster County’s Esopus Valley.

The first week of November in Marlborough is easy to let slip by — the leaves are down, the summer crowds are gone, the calendar looks quiet. But this year, this hamlet is doing something most small towns can't: a professional classical ensemble is crossing the river to tour Europe without ever leaving Route 9W, a local author who chases the Hudson Valley's vanished landmarks is bringing his newest book home, and Medicare's open enrollment window is closing with free one-on-one help. Here's what's actually on the books, verified against the library's own calendar.

Port Ewen Laundromat is a local laundry option listed at 126 Broadway, Port Ewen, NY 12466. Several business directories identify the same location and phone number, making it a practical business to know about for regular laundry needs or a temporary backup.

Public listings describe self-service laundry, coin-operated machines, and different washer sizes. Directories also mention attendant assistance and drop-off options, but customers should confirm which services are currently available before bringing in a load.
