Three Marlboro Events to Put on Your November Calendar

A professional quintet tours Europe without leaving Route 9W, a local author resurrects 62 lost Hudson Valley treasures, and free Medicare counseling lands mid-enrollment — all at the Marlboro Free Library.

The first week of November in Marlborough is easy to let slip by — the leaves are down, the summer crowds are gone, the calendar looks quiet. But this year, this hamlet is doing something most small towns can't: a professional classical ensemble is crossing the river to tour Europe without ever leaving Route 9W, a local author who chases the Hudson Valley's vanished landmarks is bringing his newest book home, and Medicare's open enrollment window is closing with free one-on-one help. Here's what's actually on the books, verified against the library's own calendar.

A Tour of Europe, Without Leaving Marlboro

Tuesday, November 10, 6:00–7:15 p.m. — Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians Concert

The evening opens with the Hudson Valley Chamber Musicians, a professional woodwind quintet founded in 2020 that plays across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Their program, "A Tour of Europe through Music," spans Baroque to contemporary works by composers from across the continent — all inside the Marlboro Free Library. The concert is free, no registration is required, and because it's a Tuesday, the library stays open until 8 p.m., so you can browse the stacks afterward. It's the kind of night that reminds you this town of roughly 8,700 people punches well above its weight culturally.

The Man Who Remembers What the Valley Forgot

Thursday, November 12, 6:00–7:00 p.m. — Local Author Talk: "Gone But Not Forgotten" with Anthony Musso

Two days later, local author Anthony Musso brings his newest book, Gone But Not Forgotten: Lost Treasures of the Hudson Valley, to the library's Community Room. Musso, a Hudson Valley resident since 1986, spent 38 years with the U.S. Postal Service and wrote for the Times-Herald Record and Gannett before turning his reporting eye to the region's disappearing landmarks. The book profiles 62 sites — brick manufactories, a whaling port, an Orange County theater district with eight venues, grand hotels that hosted U.S. presidents, and a Rockland County structure tied to Benedict Arnold's treachery. Expect a fast, story-driven talk for anyone who's ever driven past a crumbling stone wall and wondered what it was. No registration required; books are on his website for anyone who wants a copy.

Two Sundays Left for Free Medicare Help

Sunday, November 1, 1:00–4:00 p.m. — Medicare Consultations & Open Enrollment

If open enrollment sneaks up on you every year, mark this one down. A representative from the Ulster County Office for the Aging will be at the library Sunday, November 1, for free one-on-one Medicare counseling — signing up, comparing plans, and picking the fit for your lifestyle. Appointments are required and walk-ins aren't accepted, so call the Office for the Aging at 845-340-3456 and ask specifically to meet with Peggy at the Marlboro Free Library. Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, so this session lands mid-window. The library repeats the help Wednesday, November 18, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., if Sunday doesn't work.

Good to Know Before You Go

All three events are at the Marlboro Free Library, 1251 Route 9W, Marlboro, NY 12542 — 845-236-7272, marlborolibrary.org. One caveat: the library is mid-way through a building improvement project, and meeting spaces remain unavailable during construction, so arrive early for seating. The project is its own community story — donations of more than $450,000 from the Conover Family let the library buy adjacent properties, funding a 750-square-foot addition and a new James & Elizabeth Manion Community Room. Normal hours: Monday–Thursday 9:30 a.m.–8 p.m., Friday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday 1–5 p.m.

Why This Little Trio Matters

Three events in two weeks is a quiet haul for a hamlet most people drive through on the way to the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. But a pattern emerges: the music gives you Europe in an hour, the author talk gives you the Valley's own lost world of brickyards and grand hotels, and the Medicare session gives your grandparents a clearer winter. Marlborough was established in 1788, and it still runs on that old logic — take care of each other, remember what came before. Bring a neighbor to one of them. That's the whole point.
